If you’ve written off country music because you think it’s all about tractors and trucks, you should prob reconsider. I mean, everyone who claims to hate country has at LEAST one western bop that they secretly know all the words to. Here are 10 songs you’ll love even if you think you’re not into the genre—no John Deere shoutouts included.
1.’I Hate Love Songs’ by Kelsea Ballerini
Do you hate love songs? Cool. Kelsea Ballerini hates Shakespeare and Gosling and cakes with white frosting, so you guys already have something in common. (Okay, maybe not the Ryan Gosling thing. That might just be a step too far.)
2. ‘Man! I Feel Like A Woman’ by Shania Twain
Do you ever hear the “DUN DUN DA DUN DUN. DUN DUN!” in the beginning of Man! I Feel Like a Woman and become a different person? If you say no, you’re lying. Do not @ me.
3. ‘Take Your Time’ by Sam Hunt
Sam Hunt is not a regular country singer, he’s a cool country singer. He played football in college! He has a hot haircut! He wears cardigans! Also he… kind of raps sometimes? Anyway, this song is so cute and will give you unrealistic expectations for meeting a hunk at a random bar, BUT you should definitely still listen.
4. ‘Just Another Thing’ by Maren Morris
If you have so much as lightly swayed side to side to The Middle by Zedd featuring Maren Morris, then you have officially ingested a gateway drug to country music, and are at risk for becoming a Maren stan. It’s not a bad life, though. She’s pretty awesome and her music is VERY catchy.
5. ‘Back to December’ by Taylor Swift
Remember the good ‘ol days, when Taylor Swift was a country star who wrote sad songs about Taylor Lautner? Even if you’ve blocked those days out of your memory, you’ll never be able to erase the chorus of Back to December.
6. ‘Lost in the Middle of Nowhere’ by Kane Brown featuring Becky G
Don’t let the neck tattoo surprise you; Kane Brown is for sure a country singer. A song about being “lost in the middle of nowhere” is pretty stereotypically country, but the references to “808s and pounding hearts” and the Becky G feature keep it surprisingly poppy.
7. ‘Meant to Be’ by Bebe Rexha featuring Florida Georgia Line
Meant to Be broke the record for longest time on top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, with a whopping 50 weeks at number one. Everyone likes it! It’s a scientific fact at this point!
8. ‘Before He Cheats’ by Carrie Underwood
Sure, she might be one of the most iconic fitspo stars of all time, but Carrie Underwood’s true legacy is taking a Louisville Slugger to both headlights of her cheating ex’s truck.
9. ‘High Horse’ by Kacey Musgraves
Kacey Musgraves is a country artist whose music sounds more like almost every other genre than country. High Horse is kind of impossible to describe, because it’s definitely country, but has a bunch of other sounds infused. Whatever you want to call it, it’s a total bop.
10. ‘Need You Now’ by Lady Antebellum
Karaoke duet value? High. The perfect lyrics to drunk text your non-boyfriend boyfriend? Check. Typically, when making an argument, I like to provide three points, but I think that anything else would be potentially dangerous, so let’s leave this one at two.
