Drag racing suspected in I-95 car crash that left eight injured

Cops arrested two drivers after eight people were injured, one critically, in a suspected drag-racing-related wreck on the New England Thruway Sunday evening, cops said.

The multi-vehicle smashup happened shortly after 7p.m. on I-95 northbound by Exit 11 — when two BMW’s traveling at a high rate of speed collided with two other vehicles — according to law enforcement sources.

One of the eight victims was the driver of a Kia — also traveling northbound — which was rear-ended by one of the speeding BMW’s. The victim’s car then struck a Honda SUV, which in turn hit the other speeding Beemer, according to cops.

The driver of the Kia was transported to Jacobi Medical Center in critical condition – seven other people were injured and also transported to area hospitals, according to police and fire department officials.

An on-duty marked MTA police K-9 unit happened to be driving past the wreck and secured the scene until police arrived, preventing the two drivers from fleeing the scene, law enforcement sources said.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by the NYPD’s Highway Collision Investigation Squad, with charges pending against the drivers of the two BMW vehicles, according to cops.
