Joe Manganiello and Sofia Vergara have been married for almost four years now, and the couple is as adorable as the day they met. They frequently talk about each other in interviews, and their Instagrams are filled with cute snaps together. In fact, when Manganiello spoke with Men’s Health for the June cover story, he said that “life is great because I really LIKE my wife.”
Here’s what else you need to know about the superstar couple.
How did Joe Manganiello and Sofia Vergara meet?
The couple met in 2014, and Manganiello told Men’s Health that he had to move his schedule around so they could go on their first date.
“I met her when I was releasing my indie documentary that I directed. La Bare. I was in the middle of the press tour. I cleared 48 hours in my press tour to go to New Orleans [where Vergara was shooting the movie Hot Pursuit] and take her out on our first date,” he said.
In 2015, Vergara’s Modern Family co-star Jesse Tyler Ferguson appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden. As People reports, he explained how he was involved in their initial meeting:
“I knew Joe through people and we had done benefits together, and I knew Sofia from working with her, and we were at a party together and I just introduced them. And then when she broke up with her fiancé at the time, Joe – like immediately, the moment it was out in the world – called me and was like: ‘I need her number.’ And then I called Sofia and I was like: ‘Can I give Joe your number?’ And she was like, ‘Ay, no!’ – but like, wanting me to give the number – like, ‘Oh no, you go ahead, okay, okay.’ And so I did the number exchange and he took over from there!”
Joe proposed to Sofia on Christmas Eve 2014, and they got married in Palm Beach, Florida, in November 2015.
The couple were dating for about six months before getting engaged in Hawaii, and Manganiello told Men’s Health that he proposed in Spanish. The actor also told Haute Living that lurking photographers made him change his original plans:
“I had to do it indoors because the island was infested with paparazzi. There were paparazzi waiting for us at the airport and on the grounds at the resort at the St. Regis in Kauai. I wanted to do it on the beach but I couldn’t; I had to do it inside—which was fine. We had this big bay window [that I opened up], and the sun was going down pink over the mountains and over the bay, and I had this ring. I had looked at every ring in the world, and this is the ring that I wanted…it was awesome.”
Vergara later opened up about their marriage on Jimmy Kimmel Live, hilariously making fun of her husband’s obsession with the Pittsburgh Steelers. And while Vergara said that she has fun when she attends Steelers games with Manganiello, she added that she’s not too interested in the outcome of the game.
“And I don’t really care. I mean I care because then that means my week is either gonna be good or bad, but that’s all I really care,” she said.
Manganiello told Men’s Health that those differences are what makes their relationship work:
“When we come home it works for us because in so many ways we’re opposites. Masculine/feminine, yin and yang, whatever you want to call it. ‘Honey do you want to come watch the Steelers game?’ and she’s like ‘Do you want to come into my closet and look in my earring tray?’ When we’re at home we’re opposites in all the best ways and we’re compatible in all the best ways, and it works for us.”
“I always joke with her [about playing Dungeons and Dragons with him] but I’m not serious. For me Dungeons and Dragons is poker night. So I’m like, ‘That’s fine, you don’t have to care about this.’ We have so much fun but it’s OK we do separate things and it’s totally healthy.”
But even though they’re one of Hollywood’s most popular couples, Joe and Sofia know how balance work and their life together.
Manganiello is known for his roles in True Blood, Magic Mike, and Justice League, while Vergara has starred on Modern Family since 2009. Until recently, the couple had never worked together, mostly due to Vergara’s fear that the couple would “make the next Gigli.” Manganiello and Vergara starred together in the upcoming film Bottom of the Ninth, which Manganiello also produced. Vergara plays Manganiello’s love interest in the movie, and she told Men’s Health that she would work with her husband again:
“It was so much fun for me! I wish I could work with him more. We shared a trailer and it was so great to drive to work and back together while rehearsing lines and drinking coffee. It was very easy for me to play the character that was in love with him 😂 It was hard for me to see him get upset or really sad in the scenes. It made me want to cry.”
But despite all the glitz and glam of their careers, Manganiello and Vergara are down-to-earth, and Manganiello was open with Men’s Health about how and his wife unwind at home:
“People would probably shocked to hear that we do the same shit that everyone else does. We marathon Netflix shows. We’re waiting for Game of Thrones and Mind Hunter to come back. We’re watching this seventy-four part Columbian soap opera about Pablo Escobar. We like Naked and Afraid. There was a guy who made a noose out of vines and killed it by stabbing it through the head with a machete.”
And ultimately, they just love each other.
On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Manganiello explained that he knew “right away” that Vergara was the one, while Vergara told Harry Connick Jr. on Harry that she initially thought Manganiello was “too hot” for her, but she soon fell for him. She also said that while marriage is always going to take a little bit of work, it should ultimately be fun.
Manganiello echoed those sentiments with Men’s Health, saying that the couple has a great time together:
“My life is great because I really LIKE my wife. I like hanging out with her. I like talking to her. I like goofing around with her. We fucking laugh all day long every day. It’s too much sometimes. My favorite thing in the world is making my wife laugh so much she cries. Like, she’ll laugh so hard she can’t breathe. It’s the best…That’s the beauty of having somebody to share your life with. The other night I took my wife for shaved ice. It was super warm and beautiful. I went and parked and we rolled down the windows and just sang along to Cure songs while we ate our shaved ice. That’s the best.”
And his marriage advice? It’s pretty simple. “Try not to go two weeks without seeing each other, number one. That’s a good rule.”
