Lin-Manuel Miranda wiped away tears and wrapped himself in the Puerto Rican flag after his Broadway smash hit “Hamilton” premiered on the hurricane-ravaged island Friday night.

“I have never felt anything like that,” Miranda said of the crowd, which gave the cast a long standing ovation during the emotional curtain call.

Miranda reprised his role as Alexander Hamilton on Friday night to kick off a two-week run in Puerto Rico. Part of the proceeds from the show will go to help artists and cultural groups affected by Hurricane Maria.

The devastation caused by the 2017 storm loomed during the performance, Miranda said after the show, adding that the song “Hurricane” was especially hard to get through.

“It was very hard to sing that here in Puerto Rico because you know better than I what it is to survive a hurricane,” he said. “I feel like I’m going back to Maria a little bit every time I sing it.”

Audience members bought tickets ranging from $10 to $5,000.

Author Ron Chernow, whose biography of Hamilton inspired the show, was among those in attendance.

“There was an extra passion and pain and sadness and beauty that he brought to his character,” Chernow said after the show. “This was no ordinary performance tonight.”
