The whole ESPN Adam Schefter story on former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was weird. Schefter is a top news breaker, who has broken countless transaction stories, but it was strange that both Rice and the Browns denied it immediately.
Considering Rice had no known real experience as a coach or on a football field, it would stand to reason to ask first-hand folks before going with the story; especially considering how a big deal it would be.
Schefter is an access reporter. His style has made him millions. There is a place for his approach in the sports journalism game, though reporting what people don’t want you to know is much more valuable than reporting an item that will soon have a press release.
Anyway, what was was really odd was Schefter’s choice to include an anonymous Browns source saying of Rice, “She’s an amazing person.”
First, why would someone need to compliment her anonymously? Second, she was the Secretary of State and a very public person, so readers have an opinion of her already. Thus, if you want to let someone say she is “amazing,” maybe back it up with an example.
We emailed Schefter asking why he put the anonymous quote in his story.
“Thank you, Andrew,” Schefter emailed back. “Appreciate your opinion.”
